Child development researchers recommend mixed-age groupings because they foster natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, and exploring musical instruments. The class provides a variety of adult-child activities that are fun and offer new ways to play musically at home. During the summer, our groupings are multi-level to provide flexible scheduling and foster community across the studio. For an accelerated start, join Beginner Piano Camp. This 5-day camp will cover the fundamentals of rhythm, keyboard geography, piano technique, and reading music notation. Classes are about providing musical experience and creating environments that emphasize community through music. Beginners all start together for the first 8-week session to hone their fundamentals. Then, continuing students move into a multi-level class which offers plenty of flexibility and opportunities for challenge. Each week, we warm up with sight reading and scales. Students learn to apply these important skills to creative exercises that encourage everyone to make music together and challenge themselves in new ways. Every few weeks, we alternate between rehearsing a multi-level ensemble and a solo workshop.
